TENDER MUSICAL MERCIES

Still sort of in a stupor I headed out for my daily walk. I’m trying to walk at least three miles a day. I think I end up doing more like two. Anyway, as I pressed the iPod shuffle button I said a little prayer that it not come to Goldfrapp’s “Ride A White Horse” —- I know what you’re thinking, but my head was just not up for the thud of glam disco today.

However, my iPod Shuffle Karma was good and the first song that started my day in the Northern California sunshine was “Keep Love As Your Golden Rule” by HAL.

Which seemed a perfect song for me to hear as I walked to the West Oakland BART station:

“Put your hang ups in the closet
Put the fears you have in a box
Come on baby pull up your socks
And sunbeams will shine
They will give you light in the dark
…And there ain’t nobody to blame
So keep trying, baby
Be brave
Don’t listen to what they say
Keep going you’ve come all this way
…Do as you do cause your just so beautiful
Keep love as your golden rule
Keep loving the way you do
Cause that’s what those stars are saying
And count your many blessings
And sunbeams will shine
They’ll give you light in the dark
Lets get ourselves a head start…”

…The next song that came up on shuffle was one of my all time favorites, “Sweet Blindness” by Laura Nyro. Interesting because I’ve been listening to this song a lot as of late. Actually, I’ve been listening to the whole “Eli and the Thirteenth Confession” quite a bit.

B surprised me with such a cool birthday present: a turntable which we hooked up to our home theatre system and which will turn vinyl into MP3 tracks for iPod! Anyway, I’ve discovered that I can take up as much as 3 hours in a vinyl shop and spend less than $15!
Plus, my tastes do not seem to be that of most record collectors — while they scramble about looking for mint quality Chet Baker, Billie Holiday, The Beatles or The Who — I’m looking for ok quality Barbra, Andy Gibb, Carole King, Laura Nyro, Yoko Ono, Marianne Faithfull, the Captain & Tennille and the odd soundtrack.
For instance, I found Nyro’s “Eli” in near mint quality for only $2! Barbra’s “Lazy Afternoon” and Funny Lady” were 47 cents each and one had never been open!!!?!?! And, Ms. Faithfull’s revolutionary “Broken English” was all of $3 — and it has on minor scratch!

It’s exciting and hearing this music with all the snaps and is almost as comforting/grounding as holding/playing with Bagel. All the best moments of my childhood are preserved and I can close my eyes and feel a bit better for a little while. …I had forgotten how much I loved Ms. Nyro’s performance of her own song, “Stoney End” — I don’t like it as much as the hit Streisand created, but I do enjoy it very much. …As well as all of the other songs! How often can one say he/she likes every song on an album? How often can one say “album” anymore?!?!

Of course, I’m having trouble finding everything — but this is half the fun!
My Grandmother and I used to listen to Melissa Manchester’s “Don’t Cry Out Loud” LP over and over again on a weekly basis for a good year. Need to find that one! I’m also on the prowl for a great condition copy of “Barbra Butterfly” and the original soundtrack of “Ken Russell’s TOMMY” — I know these LP’s are out there waiting for me. Of course it would be fun to purchase an original Billie Holiday or Bessie Smith — that would sound so fucking awesome on vinyl, but this other music is more healing for me.

However, I have to say that Laura Nyro on vinyl has meant the most to me. I had forgotten how her words, her vocals, the musical arrangements and artistry used to touch me. …This LP in particularly moves me. And I was lucky enough to find the LP that features this gorgeous photo by David Gahr. I had a cassette of this same LP which featured a beautiful string of pictures showcasing windows which did capture a feeling, but this cover is so much more effective.

And, all these years later — and I guess I must have gotten this record when I was 7 or 8 (and it was an old record then) I have always found the quote she placed on the back of the LP so memorable and touching:

“Where is the night luster? Past my trials”

Laura Nyro – RIP

…and God bless the sound of vinyl and the magic of the memories that are good. …and, God damn the ones that make us hold tight till the pain and sadness eases so that we might move.

The trails of life are difficult. One can only hope that they are worth it. I think they are. I certainly hope so…

“…Never mind the forecast
cause the sky has lost control
cause the fury and the broken thunder’s come
to match my raging soul.

…let me start again…”

i love spending hours at the Salvation Army going through all the vinyl and looking for some good quality Sheena Easton or old school disco. many a Donna Summer LP were picked up this way, and my favourite find was a $2 record at a record show of John Davis and the Monster Orchestra…

Hot Lunch! Oh, I should check out OUT OF THE CLOSET and see what they might have in the way of vinyl! I would so love to find the old 12″ Extended Mix of Sheena/Princes’ “Sugar Walls” — which I so used to enjoy.

I almost picked up the Donna Summer “Love To Love You, Baby” LP for $1 today but I have that on my iPod and it makes me think of that movie ABIGAIL’S PARTY and am worried that having it on vinyl will lead to a very sordid and awkward dinner party at which I might wear a tight fitting polyester number and flirt.

    …that would be bad.

I wonder what John Davis and the Monster Orchestra is?!?!? Must google it.

  3. André McFarlane replied:

    Oh, Abigail’s party!

I think we should have one, where everyone has to come dressed as a character and pretend to be hat person throughout the night. You don’t have to re-enact the play, just take on the persona. Fabulous.

I love Marianne Faithful. I don’t have a turntable any more, it’s been a long time since I’ve had one of those.

  5. matty03 replied:

Oh, Andre! You know it all fun and games until someone loses an eye!

  6. matty03 replied:

Brian! Isn’t she the best?!?!? I love how her voice has transformed since she was a singer in the 60’s! I still keep her biography — it is a sort of bible of survival. …with plenty of humor because that is essential! Yeah, I hadn’t had a turntable since 1990. But, I tell ya —- “Broken English” had lost a lot of power converted to a CD. Amazing how different records sound. We lost something in that digital revolution.

  7. Dirky-Do replied:

Thank you SO much for making me think of Laura Nyro today. Although most people are familiar with covers of her songs — Fifth Dimension, anyone? — so few know HER. My best friend in college, and for many years after, introduced me to Laura. He’s gone now, but when I listen to her, we’re together again…

  8. matty03 replied:

Dirky-Do! I’m so happy her voice brings such happy memories for you. I know her talent brings me joy and comfort. Yeah, I don’t think many people think of her anymore.

It’s too bad. She needs to be ‘rediscovered’ — and who can forget that LP she did with LaBelle?!?!?

Like so many, she was taken far too early. Seems like she wasn’t even 50 yet.

    Still that joy lives on.

  9. Dirky-Do replied:

Yeah, ‘Gonna Take a Miracle’ with Labelle is practically flawless but, strangely I think, one of the least well known of her albums. I went through several copies on vinyl, and now my CD copy has started to skip!

  10. fashmagslag replied:

Marianne has such a husky, sexy voice. Not what is considered a ‘good’ voice, but you don’t forget it. And being in Ab Fab helps, too 🙂

  11. matty03 replied:

Dirky-Do — Yeah, I know. Odd, that. I find that Laura Nyro is not so well known at all anymore. You can download almost all of her work (including a really good digital re-mastered of Miracle) on iTunes. …I think, tho, it is the same one which Sony re-issued to CD a few years back.

  12. matty03 replied:

Fashmagslag! yes! Her voice can really pack a punch. And, to Edwina she would be God! It really only makes sense.

  13. johnmichael replied:

I have never heard Laura Nyro. I’m going to have to take a listen to it on youtube or borrow it from the library.
There is nothing like a good shuffle of music on the iPod to make some exercise less boring.

  14. André McFarlane replied:

I nearly had a heart attack!

  15. diamondfistwerny replied:

My Goodness, 3 miles a day!!! And I had that Andy Gibb LP!

  16. scarlet hip replied:

Andy Gibb!!! Goldfrapp! Is it any wonder I love you so?

  17. matty03 replied:

johnmichael! Yes! iPods are magical in my world! You MUST check out Laura Nyro!

Andre! Don’t do that!!?!? How do I get that accent mark above your first name’s “e”?

  18. matty03 replied:

Mr. Diamond! Yes! I have actually lost a couple of pounds which I’ve gained these last couple of months just by walking ’round a lot like a zombie. …but, it is a beautiful city (San Francisco, that is!) — And, of course, you had that Andy Gibb LP! You’re cool!

    Scarlet Hip! And, me you!

  19. André McFarlane replied:

I’m using an iMac… I hold down Alt, press E, let go of both and then type the E again. I get:

    é

  20. matty03 replied:

André !!!!! Look! I can do it! André, how are today? Do you enjoy the musical stylings of Chér? This is neat! I only want to write words with this accent mark! I love learning new things for my MAC! Talk to ya later, André! Neat!!!!

  21. ing replied:

Oh, Matty, have you converted all of your Néal Diamond Lps to Mp3s? You MUST hear The Ohsees! I will burn them for you!

    Here:

  22. diamondfistwerny replied:

You haven’t blogged in a hot minute; and I’m hoping all’s well in your world 🙂 Hope you have a great Thanksgiving!

  23. matty03 replied:

Ing! I will have to check that link out! No, I’ve not yet burned my Neil Diamond LP’s because you have failed to return them to me! I still don’t know why you love to hold them so much as you do not own an LP player, but that’s ok! I have, however, converted all my Barry Manilow LP’s to mp3’s so I will share with you!

Mr. Diamond! I’m fine! Thanks for checking! I am behind in blog land —- holidays, mental breakdown and visit from Mom. Just busy! Shall be blogging up a storm soon! Hope you’re doing!

Hope everyone is doing great and enjoying Thanksgiving if celebrated!

  24. ing replied:

Your Neil and Liza collection is still here, in my apartment. I’ll bring them tomorrow, if they’ll fit in my car. . . I tried to sell them, then I tried to give them away, but no takers. I’m sorry. But I know you have duplicates. Matty, I’m going to need to rent a truck.

  25. Tim replied:

Hélló from Énglánd! You can do it with other letters as well – this is trés cóól! Happy music listening Matty 🙂

  26. matty03 replied:

Tim! Isn’t that a cool font trick!?!?! Thanks! Listening to good music always makes me happy!

  27. Daniel replied:

That one quote from Laura Nyro about the night luster, is enough to let me know she’s brilliant. I have to find her music.

  28. matty03 replied:

Daniel! Yes! You must check out Laura Nyro — all of her music is still being printed/distributed and she was just brilliant. We lost a great artist when she passed on.

  29. ing replied:

Matty! How are you doing these days??? I need to know!

This morning I watched the Todd Haynes Karén Carpénter movie with the barbie dolls in it. Have you seen it? Pretty odd.

Dearie me, I should do some cleaning.

I had a great time on Thanksgiving, and the vegan feast you prepared for all twelve of us was quite grand. But I don’t think your mother enjoyed the tattoos you gave her. “B” seemed perfectly happy with his, but I don’t know about your mom. Mine’s all healed up now. Well, the one on my forehead is healed. The one in the unmentionable spot is still a little sore. . .

  30. matty03 replied:

Ing! Well, I think I just saw you on Turkey Day and you were tat’d right here in our living room! But, I’m ok. YES! I own a copy of the “banned” Todd Haynes Karen Carpenter movie on DVD! I thought I had shown it to you!

…so many movies — so little time. Isn’t it oddly disturbing and quite effective?!?!?! Richard Carpenter is a jerk for refusing to let Haynes release his film — however, it can be had if one knows how to look!

B booked an appointment to have his tat removed.

…if you really love me you will get me that Hello Kitty toilet paper dispenser tout suite!

    kisses,
    matty
