THE FUTURE OF MUSIC

Art is all subjective. Everyone has the right to an opinion and no one can ever be completely right or wrong. Which is really nice if you think about it. I mean, if everyone loved the same thing — well, that is a tired thought. But, you know what I mean. Diversity in art is what give us the sweet flavor of being unique.

Cinema has taken a great fall over the course of the last five years. I can only think of a hand full of films that have really shaken my core. This is just my opinion. INLAND EMPIRE is really the only movie that has totally rock’d my world in quite a while. And, I seem to be in a minority on that. But, so I am. And, I’m proud of it!

However, when it comes to music I have a much greater sense of hope! There is quite a bit out there which I am enjoying. But, once again, very little which I feel will really stand the test of time. But, only time will tell and time tends to kill most critics.

There are two “new-ish” music makers who I feel will prove to be quite important to pop/rock music history. Of course, I might end up wrong on this but I shall go out on a limb and name them both. If you’re not aware of them — you really should check them both out.

Now, you all know I LOVE Goldfrapp! I really do! Whether Alison and her main man take us on a breezy whim, a dark trip hop spin, the heights of mountains or the sheer magic of glitter trash glam disco — I shall be there! But, there is not so much loft to Goldfrapp. It is magic for me and a few others.

Nothing is completely original. Everything has been building off something else since man started to bang bones.

No, the two music makers who I feel are providing the most valid peek into what might last are:

Bright Eyes — Certainly this group (or Conor Oberst) owe a great deal of their sound to the likes of Gram Parsons and The Flying Burrito Brothers or Neil Young (this is a fairly important piece of work in my book!) — but they’ve turned those influences inside out. The music is powerful, soft, human, fragile, honest and quite often damn catchy. I think Bright Eyes is able to take the listener to places that other indie folkies can’t quite reach. These folks — and Mr. Oberst — are true artistes. …and, he ain’t bad on the eyes either! Always a plus in my book! I am quite curious to see where they continue to take us. And, I am so in love with the video to “Four Winds”! …and, you can get the George Bush protest song for free off of iTunes! Go grab it!!!

Antony And The Johnsons Candy Darling on her deathbed is the cover for one of my favorite CD’s. Once you hear the album, the picture makes total sense. — Just like Bright Eyes, this band (or Antony) owe a great deal to everyone from Lou Reed and Nico to Boy George and Grande Opera (another great piece of work — if you ask me!) — but they (or he) has warped into a beautiful bit of tragic comedy that soaks into your soul. Essentially, they rock with feeling like no one else I can think of at the moment.

These two music makers are still on the fringe but close to “breaking” — I hope they don’t ever actually cross too far into the mainstream. But the eccentricities of their work are not so far removed from the course of the individual. The songs deal with issues we all seem to run across in poetic and harmonious ways.

I suspect they are creating magic which might last the ages.

Or, I could be totally wrong. I still listen to Enrique and Britney. So sue me. (not really, I’m not officially unemployed and still on disability! This is just a figure of speech!)

matty

Maybe I suffer from A.D.H.D. or something. Cuz all I noticed is that at first glance, Iglesias looks like he’s playing with himself 😆

  2. matty03 replied:

Mr. Diamond! You suffer not! Enrique is always playing with himself — that is one of the many reasons we love him.

  3. ing replied:

Agreed, and Bright Eyes is sooooo hot! But as for movies, Matty, didn’t you think Brand Upon The Brain was amazing? I did! It’s not nearly the masterpiece that Inland Empire is, but I really really loved it, myself.

Oh, you forgot to mention Will Oldham in your list!

  4. matty03 replied:

Ing! Yeah, I really liked BRAND UPON THE BRAIN — as you know I saw it twice! But, I probably liked it as much as THE SAVAGES. Great movie, but no classic or anything.

I KNEW you would inquire about the absence of mention of Bonnie Prince Billy — who I’ve got playing right now! For me, his work never quite elevates me the way Bright Eyes or Antony do. Also, there is almost a little too much “crazy” in there. …I see dark things feeling. Still, some of his music is so beautiful. It aches. But, I’ll stick with my two hopes. I might be totally wrong. Time will tell I guess.

But, BRAND as an equal to INLAND EMPIRE?!?!? …no! no, I say!

  5. pakipoptart replied:

Hey Matty, Thanks for sharing. I’ve heard people talk about Bright Eyes but I never heard their music. I will check them out. Oh and i have a “the first time I heard Goldfrapp story.” So It was the mid 90’s and I had just bought a Tricky cd. There was a song on it with a female voice and I thought it was Sinead O’conner. But years later I opened the cd booklet and it turned out to be Allison Goldfrapp. True story.

  6. joe replied:

Inland Empire rocks! and I’m only halfway through the movie! oh, I’m such a sucker for david lynch.

oh and Goldfrapp is hot, but Enrique is hott too. In a different way.

  7. Pants replied:

    Enrique is uber yummy.

  8. matty03 replied:

Pakipoptart! Yes! That was the first time I was aware of Ms. Goldfrapp. But, don’t forget the other half of Goldfrapp, Will Gregory! I don’t think he gets enough cred! He also scores film.

  9. matty03 replied:

Joe!!! I’ve missed you! Yes, I too am a sucker for David Lynch! And, yes, hot in VERY different ways! Well, at least from the gay male perspective.

Pants! Isn’t he so totally cute!?!?! And, I don’t care what others think or say — he has a nice accent and voice! Not great, but nice enough when put thru the vocal coder.

  10. Old Cheeser replied:

Why is it my fellow bloggers are always referring to musical artists I’ve never heard of?! Probably cos I have my head buried in the sand. Actually I think there is way too much music out there – not to mention groups, singers, artists etc – to take in in one go. It’s impossible to know about everything!

Enough babble. It’s always interesting to hear about new music and Bright Eyes sounds kind of cool (even if I’m not that into indie stuff!)Will have to try and download from Limewire – thus, free! And the singer is indeed cute, rather reminscent of James Taylor?

  11. matty03 replied:

Cool Old Cheeser! lol! I do agree! There is so much. How does one stay on top of it all? I don’t think it really possible. You have to pick and choose. I don’t listen to radio or have cable. So, I depend on music magazines like Q and Mojo — and the blogs I read and love (like yours) …and, here, in Norther California, we have indie stores like Rasputin where one can listen to samples of any music sold — so you can just browse and get an idea of what new artistes sound like.

…I found out about Bright Eyes from an interview with Emmylou Harris (who is, I think, a great singer/songwriter) and I found out about Antony from an interview with Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson (both of whom are sort of like Rock Gods in my book)

This makes me think of the AbFab episode where Eds and Pats complain about the endless loop of new fashion/new music and dull souless dance music. LOL!

Ing knows more about musical artistes than anyone I know.

You’re quite right about Oberst looking a bit like a young James Taylor! Had not thought of that!

  12. The Stewardess replied:

hi, Ing…. how’s yer boobs gettin’ on? x

And I agree with the James Taylor comment.

  13. matty03 replied:

Naughty Stewardess! Perhaps Ing will answer your question. I will be seeing both she and her gorgeous boobs on Sunday. However, I’ve not seen her (or them) since 2007. However, just before Christmas — they looked quite perky and large! She is the envy of all the girls!

Yes, Mr. Oberst is quite the hornbag.

Where did your site go? It was gone the other day and worried me a great deal.

I’m still waiting for the nuts! Row C, Seat 2. Thank you, please.

  14. ing replied:

Oh, my boobs were burning, then I realized that someone was talking about them.

They are, as usual, quite the load to bear. But it’s very good exercise for the lower back. They say hey. Whazzup, they ask. Obviously, they’re getting too big for their britches.

  15. matty03 replied:

Ing! Isn’t it funny? My ass burns when someone talks about me — and your hot rack burns when someone talks about you. What about when someone thinks of you? For me, my ass sort of tingles with a hot energy when someone is just thinking of it or me.

  16. ing replied:

My front porch catches on fire (not just a burning sensation. . . it’s like literal flames shooting up and out) when someone is thinking of me or of my gynormous boobage. It’s so weird. Do you think the two of us have been endowed with psychic powers, similar to the powers depicted by actress Sissy Spacek in the movie masterpiece entitled Carrie? Except that our powers are not telekinetic in nature, but only prophetic? In other words, are we brother and sister? Because both of us have in common something hot, prominent, and symmetrical that happens to have a sensate forewarning device, if you get my drift. . .

  17. Old Cheeser replied:

Yes you’re right…reading other people’s blogs has been a damn good way of finding out about music!

Ah so you read “Q” – a good English music magazine. I occasionally buy it (used to read it all the time at one stage) but it has some good reviews and interviews.

    I remember that AbFab bit!

He DOES look like JT but a shave would improve him even more!

  18. The Stewardess replied:

a psychic arse? I thought that was Pat Robertson, no?

  19. hot lunch replied:

i love antony and the johnsons!!! hmm, what’s the new enrique disc like??

  20. The Sagittarian replied:

James Tylor. Yum. Sorry, from what I can gather you are ALL FAT TOO YOUNG to even bother with him. Leave him to me……….

  21. matty03 replied:

Ing! Let us just hope it is not a connection similar to the one depicted by DiPalma from the “mind” of Stephen King where we are siblings with “the gift” who soon begin expressing thru something called “The Fury” — and we end up getting wrangled by terrorists to use our powers for evil — and, then you would end up in a really ugly nightie and have to make John Cassavettes explode! No, that wouldn’t be very nice.

Old Cheeser! Oh, I think either would pass with a bit of stubble every day!

  22. matty03 replied:

The Stewardess! Hey, I thought you were the “Nasty” stewardess! Well, no, that wasn’t Pat Robertson. …It was just Sylvester Stallone’s mom, Jackie. …and, me. …and, Ing’s massive boobs.

Hot Lunch! Oh, cool! Well, I’ve always said you had outstanding taste! The new Enrique disc is just like all of his others! …delicious! simply delicious!

The Sagittarian! OK, we will leave JT to you — but do us well and take good care of him! I’m being kind. I may be old and fat — but forget not! I’ve an ass on fire!

    …that didn’t come out right.
