OBSESSION WITH BOBBIE

Is it her interesting-Dusty Springfield-Come-Lately vocal delivery? Her uncomfortable mix of trailer trash and 60’s kitsch fashion sense? Her stripper-like poses? Her keen Valley Of The Dolls-like hair stylings? Her romances with rich old men, Glenn Campbell and Jim Stafford?
Her affiliation with Beverley Hill-billie, Jethro’s film version of her big hit song? Her virtual self-imposed disappearance from public life and musical career?
Or, could it be her music — which is actually quite well written and produced — when she wrote and had a hand in its production? …I’m just not sure, but whatever the case — I am obsessed with one, Miss Bobbie Gentry!

…and what was it that got she and Billie Joe tossed off the bridge?!?!? I don’t buy the whole Hollywood idea of a doll to symbolize the girl’s growing into a woman. Nope. I don’t buy it. I think that girl and Billie Joe were up to NO GOOD! …and, that had to be why he jumped off the Tallehasse Bridge.

Oh, Ms. Gentry. Where have you gone? Where?!?!?!

    It’s the boy name.

  2. Meredith replied:

Oh yes, there’s no question they were up to no good. Which is good… and why we love her. Bad Bobby. I need that album.

  3. matty replied:

Gina — You know, that thought did cross my mind. As thoughts often do. But, I don’t think so. Maybe if she spelled it “Bobby” …of course, I think it is a Southern given name and then it would be spell’d both ways. Still. I don’t think that’s it. Maybe, tho.

Truth is — I don’t know. But she is all I’ve played for the last 3 days! Not a note of Goldfrapp has hit my ears! …true, I did play 3 Barbra songs at lunch, a Leonard Cohen tune last night and one Rolling Stones song day before yesterday. …but, I listen to a lot of music.

    Oh, Bobbie, Bobbie, Bobbie.

  4. matty replied:

Lovely Meredith! Yes! I think it was a case of M-U-R-D-E-R!

I just love her voice. And, that cover of “I’m Never Gonna Fall In Love Again” — is so odd. It is out of tune, but I love it. I think she must have been trying to be ironic. Maybe.

Don’t you just love the way she stands, does her hair and the general themes of her covers?!? There is another great one where she is in this little Prarie dress sitting on some steps. …but her hair is soooooo late 60’s Vegas and she’s wearing those cool little hippie boots!

I do so love that song, Apartment 21. …where she will be forever putting on some Stones and inviting us to come on up for a good time. Oh, Bobbie!

  5. Daniel replied:

It was no doll that went over the bridge that day.
She was a bad, bad girl…
    Cool!
And Billie Jo never stood a chance, poor lad. She was much too high octane for a simple country boy like him
Bobby Gentry was pretty good. A good songwriter. It’s too bad that H’wood traded in a kitschy version of that song for the sinister, doom laden lyrics that Bobby G wrote.

  6. Pants replied:

That’s it! You and I are officially sisters.

  7. matty03 replied:

Daniel – Yes! Damn straight! It is funny, it is odd that one always wonders about what those two go up to on that bridge when the real issue of the song is the failure of anyone at the dinner table to really acknowledge the pain of the girl’s loss and the loss of a young life to suicide. …more worried about the apple pie and wipin’ your feet before you come into the kitchen. …and then the full circle of it when the mother “doesn’t wanna do much of anything” after the loss of her husband. …it’s actually a damn depressing song filled with all this southern restraint and eccentricity. And, come on! Bollie Joe was NOT gay! Oy!

  8. matty03 replied:

Pants! Coo1! Can I be this sister who has a pony tail, plays volley ball and goes all Glenn Close on the next door neighbor after a drunken fling?!?!? You know the one you have to pick up after she gets dumped on some back alley road and calls you all confused at 2am? (I’d be a terrible girl)

  9. jungle jane replied:

Poor Billie Joe. Perhaps he just fancied going for a swim? Or maybe he was an exhibitionist that wanted to impress with a fancy swan dive?

  10. matty03 replied:

Jungle Jane – Ah, yes! Well the sheer bombast of a swan dive/swan song is sure to impress a simple country girl.

  11. ginab replied:

Oops, I was thinking of ‘Gentry’. 😉

Seems that only makes her a snob or a person of gentle breeding, really; but way down the line “gentleman” stems from “gentry” and so, I was thinking…

But beabs is whining right now. Some ass celebrating father’s day has decided the best way to show his love is to set off bombs. Makes my dog cry.

Gina! Oh, I get it! You know, as I am officially obsessed — I’ve learned that one, Ms. Bobbie Gentry took her last name from an old movie potboiler called RUBY GENTRY — which I’ve never seen but appears to be about a girl from the wrong side of the tracks who does good. …for a while.

Yeah, I think that wants to make all of us cry. The whole of the situation just seems to get worse and worse.

  13. Old Cheeser replied:

I’ve never heard of her – one to look up!

    Love the record covers though!

Has your Dr Who DVD arrived yet??

  14. matty03 replied:

Cool Old Cheeser! Oh, yes! You must check her out! I’m sure you’ve heard “Ode To Billie Joe”! …You will recognize it as soon as you hear it! Isn’t she fab-looking?!!?

No! The series got bumped to the bottom of my NetFlix que by B! I think I shall end up having to just purchase a series of it. I’m most curious about the version you’re watching now. …and Catherine Tate has been on that one!

  15. ing replied:

Hmmm. . . If cool old cheeser hasn’t heard Ode to Billie Joe, I suspect he is a cool cheeser, but he may not be as old as he claims. . .

  16. matty03 replied:

Ing – Yes! You are correct! I have added “the Cool” to his name because I can’t stand calling such a hot young man “Old Cheeser!” …he is only but about 37 years of age.

…still, I’m almost certain he would know the song if he heard it.

  17. matty03 replied:

    of course, I am obsessed.

  18. Pants replied:

Do you think we could take turns? It’s kind of fun to be the Glenn Close sister every once in a while. 🙂

  19. matty03 replied:

Pants! Well, but of course! That would only be fair! Every other weekend we can alternate!
