NO SMALL PARTS…

Our culture has become so obsessed with big stars and being “The Star” that it seems we have forgotten that very often it is can be supporting cast members of the movies that really make them work. Like, who can forget the little girl who stands up and says the infamous line “I’m into leather” in Woody Allen’s ANNIE HALL!??!? That one little line gets one of the best lines in the movie. And, it isn’t just the absurdity of child saying it. …It is that deadpan delivery.

And, then there is THE EXORCIST — what would it be without a talent like Mercedes McCambridge supplying the voice of the demon inside poor little Linda Blair!?!?! …or her infamous turn as Joan Crawford’s arch-rival (and real love interest!) in JOHNNY GUITAR?!?!? Or, her outstanding work in GIANT or a dozen other great films!??!? …And, what about The Great Thelma Ritter!?!?! She rocked!

There are far too many great actresses to list! …and, male actors as well. I like these two supporting actors for modern cinema:
…but the greatest comic supporting player of all time who should have been a major player! God bless Eunice Burns, Lili Von Shtupp, Trixie Delight and many others! I think we all miss
Madeline Kahn…

supporting players are hot because they make everyone else look hot! except for Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible 1. Once they killed off the could’ve been supporting players in the first half hour or so, we’re left with a buff Tom, and boring second bit players. bleah.

Jungle Jane! I know! I didn’t think either of you would mind — she is so darn cute!

Joe – Hmmmm… Never thought of it like that. You might have a point. I could not get thru that Tom Cruise movie. Like that other one he made in the 80’s — the one where he flies a bomber plane around really fast — which I was thinking was a metaphor for sex — I didn’t really understand the plots of either film. …but, wasn’t Meg Ryan an extra in that one from the 80’s? Oh! TOP GUN! Yeah, TOP GUN and MISSION IMPOSSIBLE — both went right over my head. (or under it)

Madeline Kahn rocked. I aspire to her comic brilliance.

I loved her as Lili Von Shtupp in Blazing Saddles

“Here I stand, the goddess of desire
    Set men on fire
    I have this power.
Morning, noon, and night, it’s dwink and dancing
    Some quick womancing
    And then a shower.
Stage door Johnnies constantly suwwound me
They always hound me, with one wequest.
Who can satisfy their lustful habits?
    I’m not a wabbit.
    I need some we… est”

Your knowledge of cinema (amonst other things) never ceases to amaze me! I must watch Annie Hall again, I can’t even remember that line now ….

  7. karyn replied:

Yeah, I don’t remember that line in Annie Hall either. But I did love Madeline Kahn – and Frau from Young Frankenstein – holy crap – this had me in stitches Matty.

(In Annie Hall? I loved Woody Allens’ line about “My grammy didn’t have time to bake brownies, she was too busy being raped by cossacks.” Or something.)

  8. Daniel replied:

Tom Cruise, ultimate symbol of ambiguous boredom.

Madeleine Kahn-so brilliant. I loved her in Young Frankenstein- Oh Sweet mstery of Life, At last I have found you….

And that leather line is one of the great dead pan one liners of all time.

Hot Lunch! Oh my God! CLUE is one of my friend, Bethie’s, fave movies!!! LOL! So rare I hear of someone mentioning it! She also LOVES The Other Side of Midnight, Oscar and the TV series Hart To Hart.

SassKitty!!! Yes!!!! I do so love that song (and performance!) …she is to be honored with great respect!

Tim! It is one of the best lines!!! It is the scene where Alvy goes back in his memory to his elementary school class and all the kids stand up and tell the camera what they grew up to become. …plumber, insurance salesman, heroine addict, and …”I’m into leather”

LOL! Gets me every time! And, that look on her face!

…and that great actress who played his mother in several films! I can’t think of her name! …but that scene where Alvy is no longer doing his homework because the universe is expanding. “…What’s that your business!?!?!” LOL!

  11. matty03 replied:

Karyn! LOL! Yes! Classic line! So many great lines in that movie!

Daniel! I love that description of Tom Cruise!!! Right on the nose! I’m so happy you remember that line!!! As a kid I used to pretend that this was my line if I were in the movie! …sigh.

Madeline Kahn is a hoot – odd, cos I was watching “Clue” the other night which is a hoot – love her outfit in that one, black bobbed wig and black ensemble (even though she’s playing Mrs White!) I also liked her as Eunice in “What’s Up Doc” too – hilarious! What happened to her? Did she die?

I agree the supporting actors/actresses can sometimes be as good as (if not better) than the main stars!

Cool Old Cheeser! yes, she was the best! …and, sadly, yes. She passed away during her run on the last Cosby show in the 90’s. Cancer. Sad.
