SO, WHAT DO YOU THINK OF CINDY SHERMAN?

Despite my dangerous lack of funds, I had to pick this book up when I saw it sitting all alone at Green Apple. It was pay day after all and I figure a boy should be able to buy at least one thing per pay check. Am I right? …forget I asked. Anyway, I love the images she creates. I will be reading the text analysis provided in this large volume but I’ve not done so yet. I have never been able to decide if she was a living and breathing canvas which warp’d out of Diane Arbus’ deathbed or if she is simply lampooning our culture. …or lack of it. Or, if she is lampooning us for accepting her work as fine art. Or is her work meant to make us laugh. …and cringe. The clown portraits disturb on all levels and her more recent works around genitalia or quite worrying. What does it all mean? And, how and why did she come to make the dark comedy feature film, OFFICE KILLER?!??

Much to my surprise, she is actually quite pretty when out of her costuming and posing. I think this shot was taken at an exhibit in NYC last year.

Well, here are some samples of more recent work from Ms. Sherman. Certainly gets one’s attention.

I can’t wait to read my new book, but I have to take care not to drop it in the bath or spill Diet Coke or water on it. I tend to be rough on books. That’s why I never keep them unless they are quite special to me. …or, unless they art books like this one.

I have a very dandy collection of art books — the most valuabel are my Diane Arbus and Pierre et Gilles giant books which are no longer in print. But, I suppose I look at my Isabelle Huppert art book that my brother got for me after seeing that exhibit in NYC. (Thanks Roy!!!)

I wish I were more thin.

And, I really want that jacket at Citizen.

What would Cindy Sherman do?

    Clowns? NOOOOOOO

    Too scary

  2. matty03 replied:

Dessie — well, yes. all the world is scared of a clown as well it should be. …but is it art?

  3. Dessie replied:

Good question. Yes, I think when one imitates a clown one creates art.

But to be born a clown… no, this is sacrilege.

  4. matty03 replied:

Dessie — Yes, this is my feeling too. Also, if one is born a clown that means one will be doing much damage to the world! Shudder to think that clowns are a genetic mutation of human biology! oy!

My eyes! My eyes! I’d like to meet a woman who obviously gets so much pleasure from dressing up and taking pictures of herself. But I hope she leaves the clown costume at home. Bad clowns. Very bad.

  6. matty03 replied:

Lovely Meredith — LOL! Yes, the clown images are really disturbing — and I spare’d you the true horrors from that series! LOL! There are many more much and far more horrifying. However, she has been using herself as art since the mid-70’s. Amazing work. …a “body” of work.

I’ve asked my brother to write a bit about her work for me that I might cut and paste it here.

He has shared some way cool things but I’m not allowed to share them in the blog or public realm.

My baby brother has quickly become well connected. I’m most proud and can’t wait to hear all of his exciting adventures in about 2 weeks when me and B join him at — gulp – a family reunion.

However, those fun conversations will be “off the record”

I should note that he only had great things to say about this artiste. …and nothing sensationalistic. …just private, I guess.

sigh. to live the life of an artiste and brush with the famous and infamous.

however, i do feel in a while others will be talking about him!

Oh I do like her work, I blogged about her way back. I’m not familiar with her recent work, but there are a couple of her shots that stuck in my mind.

I think shot of her: http://www.mrhappysad.com/blog/images/sherman0.jpg

Anyway Matty. Hope you’re having a good day today, and for the rest of the week to come! xoxo

  8. ing replied:

Me too, I wish you a good day and week.

  9. Karyn replied:

Gaaaaaaaaaa! Effing CLOWNS! Matty! This must stop! At least post a warning!

  10. matty03 replied:

Robert! Oh, please send me a link to your post about her!!!! I can’t find it!!!

Hope you had a great weekend, too!!! …and an even better week to come! Long weekend coming up!!!!

    I wanna go to LA!!!

  11. joe replied:

i have no idea who this Cindy person is. Or I’m purposely drawing a blank.

  12. matty03 replied:

Ing — I wish you had been up to joining us tonight! You would have loved it! We missed you!

Karyn – Well, I thought about that. They scare me, too. But sometimes we all need a good fright! Besides, it’s high art. …meant to stir a response! (sorry if it a scared you too much!)

    kisses,
    matty

Joe! Do a “google” — I think you would really enjoy her early work where she sort of explores the theme of women as portrayed by men in the classic film era. Very interesting stuff.

…tho, the clown stuff seems to really upset people.

    me included.

why do clowns scare us so? i mean, we all know that they tend to be child molesters and mass killers — but some must be nice. tho, they’ve only ever horrified me.
