and run! For several weeks I’ve been seeing these posters about the city. The idea of people dressing in gorilla suits and running in a 7K marathon just makes me laugh. And, I attributed it to the normal eccentricities one sees in San Francisco. However, upon further inspection I have discovered that we are not the first city to hold such a marathon. In fact, I believe it started in the UK — and, in my opinion, this is another important sort of run.

The money raised by running around the city in a gorilla suit will go to fund saving the lives of the endangered gorillas of Africa. When I realized that this was not just a silly act, but a silly act designed to call attention to an atrocity which continues to be committed to beautiful animals who are actually probably our brothers and sisters. My stomach still turns when I think of that film from the 80’s about Dian Fossey in which we see the horrid mutilation of gorillas for financial gain. I think what makes it all the more horrid is the fact that we all know we appear to have evolved from these animals. They are so close to human it fascinates.

So, when we see people running through our gorgeous city dressed up in gorilla suits — I think it is important to celebrate the absurdity of the sight — and, to laugh. But, I hope we can all remember what the goal of this run is — and its importance. …And, to maybe offer lots of waters to the brave souls who opt to get in one of those hot suits and run. Oy! …Come to think of it, maybe we should offer a hug to the poor souls who have to dry clean those customs after they’ve been worn for a run in June! …It would be kind of funny to see them running across the Golden Gate!

…or, to see them going for a sail after their run.

    Heh. Monkeys.

Kevin! Are you like Jerri Blank? Do monkeys make you giggle? Then you should come to sunny SF — yes, we are in sunny season — tho, the fog does roll in. Anyway, you should come and laugh as the folks dressed in gorilla suits run for 7k!

  3. Karyn replied:

    God, I’ve missed you.

Please – oh please – take (and post) pictures.

    Love you!

Karyn! I love and miss you, too!!!

I was reading your latest post just this morning, but had to get to work for 7am! I am going back to finish it later! As always, great writing!

Pictures?!?!? LOL! Yes, I bet I will be taking a few this weekend as my pal, Bethie, is going to be in San Jose!

Did we evolve from gorillas? I thought it was chimpanzees. But honestly, I’m probably wrong & too lazy to look into it. I never did see the Diane Fossey pic. Is it all right? I had an aunt who worked with wild chimps (not gorillas) back in the seventies. If you hadn’t said something about the cause, I never would have known that this wasn’t just some wacky San Francisco thing.

Say hi to Beth, from me!

  6. matty03 replied:

Ing — Actually, I think you are correct! But, gorillas still seem very similar to us. I remember the movie being good but it was the 80’s. …I was in a bit of a blur at times. I do remember laughing a lot when she screamed, “Get off my mountain” to the two scientists who were sleeping together while she was busy studying the animals.

    I will!!!!!

I think we’re all kin, apes and chimps and sapiens.
What an awesome cause to run for. I admire every single runner.
I would, however, drop something in the suggestion box about scheduling this in cooler weather.
    Just sayin’.

Daniel, yes — this will be interesting to watch, but torture to be in the suit! …tho, it is usually cooler here in the city — june is not all that cool. LOL!
